Qualities of a Translation Company

1)      Great quality. An outstanding translation company will never compromise on quality. Over and above everything else, a great translation is the criterion used to measure the work done and most highly prized by clients.

2)      Competitive, not Lowest Pricing. I have always been skeptical of claims delivering highest quality at lowest prices. Having worked in the translation (and other industries) for a decade, I am forced to conclude that this simply is not possible. High quality translations can only come from dedicated professionals who have spent many years honing their skills. They therefore have a right to fair renumeration. Thus great translators will not work below a certain price, which is ultimately borne by the client.

Competitive pricing, on the other hand, is a definite possibility. The outstanding translation company can act as a medium between the client and translator, negotiating a fair, acceptable and competitive price between the two.

3)      Deliver BEFORE, not on time. Delivery on time is acceptable. However, this is only the minimum industry standard. You have only met, but not exceeded client expectations. So when possible, deliver before time. There are also practical reasons why this is so beneficial. Let me illustrate with an example:

Suppose a translation is due by 5pm today. You deliver at 5pm to the client. He checks and discovers mistakes and misunderstandings. There is a mad scramble to correct the document as he needs to deliver to HIS boss at 5.30 pm.panic

Suppose now you deliver at 2pm. He is free at 3pm, reads it and discovers the problems. You (and him) now have at least 2 hours in order to rectify the problems. There is time for revision. No fuss or panic is created.

4)      After Sales Service:  A great translation company will always ask its clients for feedback and ways to improve.

5)      Reliability and consistency. An outstanding translation company will always deliver on time, with great quality translation and competitive pricing. It should also be able to hold one to its best translators and avoid changing them for long-term assignments.

These are just some of our personal feel.

Do You Have What It Takes to Be a Successful Translator?

Recently, I just watch this movie “Slumdog Millionaire”. It is a very compelling movie illustrating a man’s journey in finding his own dreams, true love and destiny.

It strikes a deep thought for me. We will never know our true purpose until we step out and start this self-discovery journey. We just gonna keep on believing and taking actions towards our dream.

When I first joined my friend’s translation company, a lot of my people (even my family members) start to question me. Are you making the right move? What if the situation does not turn out the way that you want? Are you getting enough to spend each month? Blah…Blah…Blah. Lot of negativities being thrown to me.

I have been with my company for almost 2 years now. Looking back, it has been a very fruitful experience for me. We have led our company to new heights each year. Our team of translators has also grown in size to over one hundred till now. This is definitely a more challenging experience than my previous engineering job. Besides equipping with good translation skills, I also need to do project management, sales and marketing and leading my own translator teams. The true joy is seeing your company and yourself growing daily.

If you ask me, what it takes to be a Successful Translator? Is it…
a) Passion
b) Perseverance
c) Continuous Learning
d) Continuous Improvement

Well, my answer is all of the above. Hopefully at the end of our journey, we would become a better person to our society and this world. And not forgetting, to fulfill our ultimate destiny and purpose in life.

Well, some said it is written.

Type of Translation Jobs in Advertising Industry

Do you think that translators only do document or manual translation?  Well, think again… our job can be fun and challenging at times.

Some of our clients come from the Advertising industry.   Most of the times, they do not want direct translation.  They would prefer copywriting.  This means that our translator would need to write in a creative style and still capture the essence of the whole copy.  Yes, the skill level needed for such job is higher.

Having to say that, if you have great passion for language semantics, I believe it would not be too difficult to translate into a good copy.   Moreover, it would be a great satisfaction to see your translated copy being published for the mass public.  You can also keep the published copy in your portfolio and show to your future clients.  This will definitely raise your profile as a translator.

So, what are the types of translation jobs that you can expect to get from a Advertising agencies?

1.  Above-the-line advertisement.

Above-the-line is the term for mainstream paid advertising.  Such advertisement is to appear in newspapers, magazines, transit ads, outdoor poster etc.

2. Commercials

Script translation for television and radio commercials

3. Sales and Merchandising Promotion

These will include brochures, leaftlets, pamphalets,  posters, signage displays, window banners, floor stickers, shelf stickers etc…all these marketing collaterals would definitely need translation if the client wish to create a greater brand awareness to the public.

Multi-racial, Multi-language translation

As you all might know, Singapore is a multi-racial country. The four official languages in Singapore are Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English.

English is the most common language used. Children are taught in English at school but also learn their mother tongue to make sure they don’t lose contact with their traditions. This is made compulsory by our education system where every child is given a chance to take up an additional language as their Second Language (example Mandarin, Malay or Tamil).

Public signs and official publications are in English, although there are usually translated versions in other official languages.  Some of the advertisment, marketing collaterals and newsletter will often be translated into other languages for ease of understanding.

During festive seasons, there are also a higher demand for certain language translation.  This is obviously due to advertisers who wish to promote their services or products catering to a bigger market during these seasons.

For Lunar New Year and Mooncake festival, we see that there are more demand for Mandarin translation.  Likewise for Hari Raya and Deepavali,  there will be higher demand for Malay and Tamil translation respectively.

Sometimes, you may find different languages in a single brochure.  Naturally, such brochures are catered for greater public audience.  The multiple languages add a unique feel to such brochure too.
